Bio: Jessica Ward MS
Master’s in Behavior Analysis, University of North TexasBio Highlights
- Motivated by a lifetime of interest in animals, training, and behavior
- 20+ years horse experience and 10+ years as professional dog trainer
- Studied Behavior Analysis under Dr. Jesús Rosales-Ruiz at the University of North Texas, completing a master’s degree in 2021
- Completed several projects while at UNT, including a training procedure for horses to accept the deworming process, using a constructional approach (successfully defended as master’s thesis in December 2021)
- Conducted research using PORTL (Portable Operant Research and Teaching Lab), and has facilitated others in learning to improve shaping and training skills and mechanics through PORTL
- Served as president of the Organization for Reinforcement Contingencies with Animals (ORCA) from 2019 to 2021
- 10+ years experience in professional dog training, including private behavior consultations and group classes
- Worked as a behavior specialist at SPCA of Texas, as part of the Behavior Rehabilitation Program (BRP) for shy and fearful dogs
- Volunteered with multiple horse rescues to start horses under saddle and prepare them for adoption
- Completed an internship at EquiLightenment in fall of 2021, and has been on staff since February 2022
- Current areas of interest include training foundation behaviors (handling skills for foals, groundwork and riding preparation in young and adult horses), fine-tuning handlers’ shaping skills and training mechanics, improving reinforcement systems, and problem solving behavior issues
